Welcome to Miami

Well hello dear readers!! Like most of our bloggy blog friends, Jeff and I took a small hiatus from the blogging world as we celebrated the holidays with our families. I know blogging has been scarce for us this past month or so, but we’ve got tons of awesome stuff coming up that we can’t WAIT to share with everyone. Just to share what’s been going on with us during our holiday break:

1) We had a wonderful Christmas in our new home, and yes, we still have Christmas decorations up. In fact, we’re doing so much traveling in the next month, that we may have them up until Valentine’s Day… Jeff is definitely rooting to have them up all year.

2) I gave Jeff the coolest Christmas present ever. Like, EVER. I was really unsure about the whole thing, but it proved to be a monumental success. Lots of photos coming soon…

3) Jeff’s side of the family gathered in Ft Lauderdale, Florida, to soak up some sun and beach for the week between Christmas and New Years. We spent our time sipping Pina Coladas, hanging at Tiki Bars, laying by the pool, and jumping the ocean waves on jet skiis! Wahoo!

We took tons of pictures of our family while everyone was gathered together, but I’ve decided to spare everyone the vacation pictures! Instead, we headed down to South Beach in Miami and Jeff and I went nuts in the Art Deco district. All these were taking with one of the new goodies that Santa brought us this year - the Canon 35 f/1.4 L. Yummy.

Everyone we talked to before leaving for Florida told us that the weather was going to be nice, but not THAT nice. They said it wouldn’t be beach weather and to just pack as if it was San Diego. Well, when we arrived, it was a balmy 85 degrees and total beach weather! Buried in my jeans, sweaters, and t-shirts, I had only a few items to last me the week. Luckily, Jeff’s cousin, Sarah, is the coolest person I’ve ever met and let me borrow her stash of Anthropologie pieces. Love you Sarah!

Ocean Drive in South Beach is lined with tons of Art Deco hotels, and by 6pm the restaurants were hopping!

Sarah, Jeff and I (aka total suckers) stopped at a restaurant that was boasting 2 for 1 drinks and half off appetizers, so we decided to get a little bit of food to hold us off until dinner later that evening and just people watch on Ocean Drive. The appetizers were fabulous and the drinks were incredibly tasty. However…

…the drinks were ENORMOUS! I think our eyes popped out of our heads when we saw them coming towards us! So we figured that they had simply combined our two drinks into one because of the 2 for 1 drink special. But when we asked for our check, the waitress gave us a strange look and asked, “Don’t you want your second drink?” (!!!!) So we had to get our second round of ENORMOUS (and particularly strong) drinks in to-go cups and walk down the street with huge cocktails, looking like drunken tourists. So when Miami Beach says 2 for 1, they’re serious!

We still had tons of fun with the neon lights.

We met up with the rest of Jeff’s family at A Fish Called Avalon at the Avalon Hotel a little later and had a fabulous dinner. Needless to say, I only had a small glass of wine…

And no, I wasn’t long gone. :) Jeff dared me to look like I was eating and drinking alone at the table next to us, and I got a little bit too into character!

Lots more exciting things to come in the next few days and weeks! Happy 2009 everyone!
Hugs,
Erin

Danielle and James | Engaged

They clicked instantly. His humor, her smile. They just fit so perfectly together. He made her laugh, she made him sparkle, and their love lights up the room. So when the dessert plate arrived after a fabulous dinner at one of their favorite restaurants, her joy stopped the world in its tracks. Written around the plate were the words, “Will you marry me?”

Jeff and I have been so HONORED to get to know Danielle and James through our Pictage User Group meetings. Like us, they photograph weddings together, and these two are fantastic at it! Not only do they produce awesome images, but they have the fun and exciting personalities that is so vital for wedding photographers. We absolutely love these two and we had tons of fun at their engagement session.

***Friends and family: To be notified when the rest of the pictures go online, please sign the guestbook here.***

We started off at Balboa Park to “loosen” them up and get them used to the camera, but seriously, there was no need! They were naturals!

I love James’ smile!

And Danielle definitely knows how to rock it!

After Balboa Park, we headed downtown and played around with all of the textures.

Abandoned building + Jeff and Erin + sweet couple = pure joy.

Isn’t Danielle the cutest?!

So we always tell our couples to wear fun shoes and Danielle did not disappoint! Loved these!

Danielle and James - Thank you so much for hanging out with us. You two are seriously cool people and we really love your friendship! You two rock our socks off!

Hugs,
Erin

Gary and May | You’re Invited to San Diego!!

I love being a wedding photographer. Its seriously a cool job. What I love most about doing what I do is all of the cool people that we get to meet. For example, Sarah and Thomas are rad people. We took some rad photos for them. And Sarah and Thomas know rad people. Enter Gary.

For the past week I’ve been talking with Gary, a friend of Thomas and Sarah’s. He got married back in August in Santa Barbara, and he wants to give his new beautiful wife, May, the most meaningful gift for their first Christmas together. Both of them love San Diego and want to retire here, and years from now they want to show their grandkids the love they shared as a young married couple. So what better way to capture San Diego and their young love than with a photo shoot in a wedding dress and tuxedo in the most beautiful place on earth?

So dearest May, on behalf of Gary, Jeff and I officially invite you down to San Diego on Tuesday, December 23, for a Christmas present that you’ll never forget - your very own Day After Session in the city where you will retire and live happily ever after with your husband!

From the time of this post, you have six days to prep for your very own wedding shoot in your beautiful gown down here in San Diego! Gary has made all of the other preparations for you, and more details will come from us directly. For now, just know that your husband wants to give you not only his past and his present, but all of his future as well!

Merry Christmas!!

More Noah…

I know, I know… more baby pictures!! BUT I am heading back to San Diego tomorrow so I won’t be here in Seattle anymore taking hundreds of pictures of my new little nephew. Noah is officially four days old now and cute as a little newborn button!

Lynn and Jared let me play around with Noah and work on my baby shooting skilz.

Although I may be biased, December babies are the best. (I was born on December 14)

I think the best part of being around Noah is all of the positions that he sleeps in. Every so often he’ll throw his hands in the air while sleeping.

We’ve started calling this his Prayer Pose.

And little did we know it, but my sister gave birth to a ninja!

Lynn and Jared: Thank you so much for allowing me to hang out with Noah and share in this incredible experience with the two of you. I love little Noah and he will be VERY spoiled by his crazy aunt and uncle!!

Little Noah has Arrived!!

Well its official, Jeff and I are the crazy aunt and uncle!! My sister, Lynn, and her husband, Jared, just had their first little boy, Noah Alvaro, yesterday at 1:03pm in Seattle, WA. He weighed in at 8lbs 3 ounces and 21.5 inches long. I flew in to Seattle this past Wednesday to help Lynn and Jared finish all of their preparations - nursery, last minute errands, etc. - but I really didn’t think she would have Noah while I was here (although I was hoping). She was due this next Monday, and most first pregnancies go well past the due date. But Lynn broke all of the rules with a first pregnancy and had Noah early and quickly!

I was there for the labor and delivery and photographed as much as I could. Not only was it incredibly meaningful to capture all of the most precious moments for my sister and bro-in-law, it was one of the best lessons in true photojournalist photography I’ve ever had. I was forced to create solid images out of rapid events in very difficult hospital lighting (soooo flattering…) with not much room to work with. And of course, I had no control over the action! But I loved every minute of it and had to share my favorites moments with everyone

Lynn went into labor at 3:15am and we were in the hospital by 5:15. I remembered to actually record the time at 5:51am. :)

Lynn just as we arrived and right before major contractions started. She brought the headband because she wanted to be cute during her labor! I loved it!!

Lynn had an epidural, which seriously, I don’t know how anyone did/does it without one. I applaud every woman in history that gave birth with no meds!!

Everyone says that its an amazing experience watching someone give birth, and I was so emotionally overwhelmed by it. Its a good thing I was behind the camera, because I was losing it!! Here’s Noah seconds after being born and Lynn seeing him for the first time. There’s plenty more images of Noah at this stage, but I decided to be nice and show one of the less “gooky” ones!

My absolute favorite image that I think I have ever taken. Everything was happening in a whirlwind and suddenly my view was completely blocked when Jared was about to cut the umbilical cord. I quickly ducked at the last minute and only had time to shoot off two images before Noah was whisked away. I was praying that at least one was in focus and I just about died when I saw that I nailed it! I feel like this image says it all - Lynn holding Noah, Jared’s hands with the scissors, his ring on his hand, the blood on her gown - it all says that he’s finally here.

Big boy!!

Getting cleaned up by the baby nurse.

It always shocks me that they come out with finger and toenails!

I’m a dad!!!

Daddy holding Noah for the first time. Uncle Jeff, don’t cry at this one. I know you are!!

My mom had been driving out from Idaho to Seattle and had spent the previous night in Oregon. When Lynn went into labor early, my mom raced the rest of the way to Seattle and ran through the hospital door just minutes after he was born! Great timing!! Here she is seeing her first grandchild for the first time. I think she’s planning the next hundred gifts she’s going buy him already!

Mom and baby boy.

A few hours later, Noah had to get his first bath, which I think was the cutest thing I’d ever seen!

He got his head scrubbed, which was more like a head massage!

Aunty Erin!

After a little rest and the lovely headband, Lynn was the cutest new mom ever!

And yes Jared, you’re the cutest new dad ever. :)

Hugs,
Erin

Sarah and Thomas | Day After

He had just bought the ring, but he couldn’t ruin the surprise. Over the next few weeks, whenever the topic of marriage came up, he shrugged it off. He was happy with how things were, he lied. Why did they need to get married? She didn’t know what to think. Confused, Sarah tried to convince herself that he was right. Maybe they didn’t need to get married after all? They could still live happily ever after, right? But she knew in her heart of hearts that she wanted to be his wife and nothing else would do. But one night, when Sarah came home from a long day at work, Thomas showed her the ring and told her what was in his heart of hearts - to spend the rest of his life by her side.

We met these two at Amy and Andy’s wedding in August and were mutually bummed that they had already hired a resort photographer for their November wedding at the Mandalay Bay Resort in Las Vegas. But that didn’t stop us! Even though we didn’t get to share their most special day, we did the next best thing - a customized Day After shoot! If you’ve already had your wedding, would like some creative pictures after the wedding day, or just want to get back into your dress again, Day After shoots are definitely the way to go! These are great if time is too limited on the wedding day to get all the pictures you want, or if you’d like to get more creative shots than what your venue allows. We can literaly go anywhere and do anything!
Take note: Day After Sessions are similar to Trash the Dress Sessions in that your dress will get dirty, but we don’t actually ruin the dress unless you specifically want us to. Think of Day After Sessions as doing things in your dress that you normally wouldn’t do on the wedding day.
***Friends and Family: To be notified when the rest of the pictures go online, please sign the guestbook here. ***
These two are so cute! They were immediately comfortable in front of our cameras and they let us get as creative as we wanted! Woohoo!

I’m sure Sarah already knows this, but Thomas’ laughing smile is the best smile ever! This guy is HANDSOME

Sarah’s eyes are just magnificent!

I’ve seen this doorway several times, but have always passed it up. As soon as I saw Sarah’s dress, however, I knew it’s time had come..
We headed up into Laguna Canyon and played around in the fields. We were so excited to play around with a bride and groom in this kind of setting!

I really like this image that Jeff captured as I was working with Sarah.

Jeff’s view - gorgeous sunlight!

My view

Yes, Sarah is a babe. And yes, Sarah is the most awesomest babe ever for laying on a branch in the middle of the woods with her dress on. And yes, the boys had to pick her up and place her there! What can I say? I had a vision and it needed to be explored!
I love seeing how differently Jeff and I approach certain set-ups. This is my view.

This is Jeff’s view.

And my view again, with the added Bond-like studliness of Thomas himself. I did tell him several times that only Bond and Bond-minded peeps would be walking around in a field with a sweet suit on.

Sarah and Thomas - Thank you so much for hanging out with us and being so fun! We had such a blast and loved getting to know the two of you better! Now go use your ice cream maker and eat a bowl of Christmas Peppermint goodness for the two of us!
Hugs,
Erin

The Devil Wears Zit Cream

I didn’t get pimples until I went to college. By the time I donned my high school graduation robes, I thought I had managed to avoid the facial curse that had plagued so many of my friends. Yes, I got zits every once in while, but they were nothing to get panicked about. But somewhere between after-graduation parties and packng for college, my skin got some serious attitude. In three short summer months, I went from zero to mild pimples, to full blown might as well wear a mask all day acne. The worst part being that it meant that I had the worst of all acne problems - Adult Onset Acne. Yes, not only did I get major acne, but it happened when everyone else I knew was growing out of theirs!! Their skin turned into beautiful swans while I regressed into an ugly duckling!

In many ways, I think I deserved it. All of those teenagers who suffered through high school with braces and pimples are now getting their revenge on those of us who flitted through teen-dom and now are full grown adults with sixteen-year-old faces. I’ve learned to manage my AOA (or The Devil as I call it), but I still get major breakouts and - I can’t believe I am admiting this to all three of our blog readers - MONSTER pimples. These beasts begin underneath my skin and grow into big lumps before they turn red and appear on top of my skin. By that time, they have been fed and nurtured by The Devil to the point that there is no stopping a big red yucky mess - and lots of zit cream. Ask Jeff, he thinks they’re hilarious (so sweet).
Well, dear reader, the Son of The Devil himself has arrived.
About two weeks ago, one of these Monsters was born underneath my cheek. It grew to a big lump and I thought, “Oh great, here’s another one and its in the perfect spot - the un-ignorable front of my cheek.” Well, this lump never came above my skin and got kind of hard and weird, so I thought that maybe this wasn’t a zit (yay!) but something more serious like a cyst or - gosh - melanoma! So I immediately made an appointment with the doc and shakily described the lump to a caring and loving primary care physician. She took one look and said, “Yep its a zit. You need some major antibiotics. About a week should do it. If not, you’ll have to get it popped (POPPED people!) by a dermatologist.”
Erin’s face: 0 The Devil: 1
When I called and told Jeff, I politely waited on the phone while he laughed for a full five minutes.
The good news is that you can’t even see The Monster until you get close, so maybe this one will be merciful (besides the embarassment of having my pimple popped by a professional). In other news, I am so excited to share an INCREDIBLE day after session that Jeff and I shot this past weekend, so here’s a quick preview! More to come tomorrow!

Aaron and Pam + One | San Diego, CA

I think its the way he makes her smile that I love so much. Pam is GORGEOUS, but when she glances over at Aaron, her smile radiates something genuine and wonderful. He laughs, and she glows. He gives her a kiss, she softens. Their baby girl will forever know how in love her parents were.

Jeff and I have known Pam and Aaron for most of our marriage. They are part of our Young Married’s Bible Study that we attend as part of our church, and it has been an instrumental part of our marriage and faith. This group of people has become a solid foundation for us and we can’t say enough great things about Pam and Aaron in particular. These two are just fun and easygoing and we were so excited when we heard they were expecting! Our little bible study is growing!!

***Friends and Family: To be notified when the rest of the images go online, please sign the guestbook here.***

I met up with Pam and Aaron in Mission Beach to get a good variety of colors and backgrounds. These two are so relaxed around each other! Aaron’s big smile always cracks me up!

Gotta get some good profile shots of the belly! Pam’s due in February, and she’s got the cutest bump already!

Pam was such a trooper getting down on the ground for me.

I know, you can’t see the belly in this one, but they’re so darn cute!!

My favorite. I love everything about it. Pam is so BEAUTIFUL!

Rockin’ it out for Aaron.

We headed to the beach and the breeze made everything quiet and peaceful.

Pam and Aaron - Thank you so much for letting a dork like me hang out with you guys for an afternoon. You two are so much fun to be around and I can’t wait to meet your baby girl!
Hugs,
Erin
